What is coaching?
Coaching, at it’s core is a collaborative, solution-focused process designed to help individuals bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
Unlike therapy (which often looks backward to heal) or consulting (which provides specific answers), coaching is about empowerment. A coach acts as a catalyst, using powerful questioning to help clients unlock their own potential and design their own strategies.
While the foundational skills of active listening and accountability remain the same, the focus and “vibe” change depending on the niche.
Life coaches help clients find purpose, improve relationships or navigate life transitions.
Executive coaches work with high-level leadership to develop “soft skills”, manage organisational change and strategic thinking.
Business coaches focus on helping companies scale, improve profitability and refine business systems.
Wellness coaches help individuals establish sustainable wellness habits and manage stress, they can focus on physical as well as mental health.
Sober or Alcohol-Free coaches help clients navigate life without substances and build a sober “toolkit” beyond detox.
Career coaches guide clients through career pivots, presume positioning and navigating office politics.
These are just a few examples of the many different types of coach you could become.
Should I become a coach?
For many, coaching is the ultimate encore career – a second act that combines personal meaning with social impact.
When you coach, you aren’t just sharing “what” you know; you are leveraging your “pattern recognition.” After decades of life experience, you can see the pitfalls others can’t and share your lived experiences to help guide them.
Becoming a coach isn’t just a service to others; it is a profound journey of self-development.
You become a “master listener” which translates to deeper, more empathetic connections in your personal life and family.
You develop an intense presence and mental agility. It keeps your mind engaged with new problems and diverse perspectives.
Coaching is one of the few professions that is truly “location independent,” allowing for a lifestyle that prioritises travel or family time.
There is an immense psychological reward in knowing your lived experience is directly helping someone else avoid a mistake or reach a milestone faster so if you’re wondering “should I become a coach?” The answer is probably yes.
